sometimes being in middle – like being stuck in the middle seat on a long car trip – is not the coolest. but sometimes the best part is the middle. seventh grade is the middle year of middle school, and it was one of my favorite years in my entire academic career. here’s why:
choir: in sixth grade you only get one elective, and I picked theatre. but in seventh grade you can be exempt from reading and have two electives, so I got to take choir too. choir is where I learned that I am an alto and that I love to harmonize. I also picked up a couple life skills, like how to use mascara and how to curl my hair, which still come in handy today.
TX history: I think it’s funny, but fitting, that we learn about our state history before we take american history, which comes in eighth grade. let’s be honest, TX is its own country anyway, and we have enough heroes and legends in our history to back it up. did you know that the TX state flag is the only one that is allowed to fly at the same height as the american flag? it’s cause we’re awesome.
my locker: I already told you I was obsessed with my locker number that year (so random, I know) but I also liked how it was centrally located between my classes, the theatre room and the cafeteria. seventh grade is also the year that you get a grey locker – if you are familiar with DMS, you know the sixth graders get pink lockers and eighth graders get cream colored ones that no one uses because they’re in a back wing of the school next to the nurse’s office and woodshop. seventh grade lockers is where it’s at.
first love: yep, I’m going there. seventh grade is the first time a boy asked me out, and I was pretty excited about it. mainly because he was in eighth grade, which I thought made me really cool. pretty sure our relationship lasted a week, and by “relationship” I mean he waited for me before first period to give me a note, and I wrote him one back and waited after seventh period to give it to him. no actual talking in between. also pretty sure he broke my heart after a week, except that I don’t remember being too upset about it. and after that, we started actually talking to each other and became real friends. if only all breakups ended this nicely!
all in all, seventh grade was a good year. it’s less scary than sixth grade, because you have a year of experience in middle school and you know what to expect, but it’s not like eighth grade when you begin to worry about high school. seventh grade is is the peanut butter in the pb&j sandwich, the frosting in the uh-oh oreo (I don’t like the normal frosting), the chocolate filling in those koala bear cookies you ate when you were a kid. or in my case, you ate for breakfast this morning, because I’m still in seventh grade at heart.
this is the second installment of a 3-part series. stay tuned for the conclusion on the Lohdown!
